There are many different types of filling mechanisms that were used in the early days of fountain pen manufacture. Most of the early pen makers were competing in trying to invent innovative filling mechanisms.

Pen makers of the early 1900s like Onoto, Swan Mabie Todd, Watermans, Parker, Conway Stewart, Sheaffer, Pelikan, Montblanc to name a few were all competing for a market share. Therefore in competing they were constantly looking for a superior filling system.
