Fountain pen collecting, how it began..
Once upon a time, quite a few years ago when fountain pens were of no interest to me, a friend asked me whether i would like to attend a large Antique and Collectible fair.
After telling him that i thought all that old stuff was boring and of no interest to me, he eventually persuaded me to accompany him to the fair.
As i had nothing else to do on the day, we went. Once we were at the fair i was rather surprised at the vast selection of unusual and interesting items as well as my own interest in some of the things that were available for sale.
We spent hours walking around the hundreds and hundreds of stalls while i helped to carry my friends large number of items he had bought.
I approached a small stall and looked through all the interesting items that were laid out on display, and i noticed a selection of fountain pens. One pen stood out to me a grey colored pen with what looked like a chrome cap.
I was a little overcome with a sense of nostalgia as i explained to the stall holder that i had one of them at school when we were learning real writing.
After inspecting the pen like a professional which consisted of taking the cap of and then replacing it i decided to buy it.After a brief bartering session with the gentleman the pen was mine for a princely sum of £3.00.
That was the moment i was hooked i had just bought my first grey Parker 51 Aerometric.![]()
Now hooked, I have spent a lot of time scouring fairs, boot sales, auction houses etc for vintage fountain pens.
I also began to clean and repair pens that were in need of some attention and bring them back to life.I am a little selective with regards to which pens I wanted to keep therefore i began selling my pens on a well known auction site.
I have enjoyed a good deal of success through my pen sales and i have even introduced others to fountain pen collecting. My feedback has been positive and emails from buyers that have thanked me as well as complemented me on my work has been appreciated.
One such buyer has become a good friend and we regularly attend auctions and fairs together. As the years have gone by i have become more experienced in fountain pen restoration.
I have now launched my own site here at Grandmia Pens to offer my services. But not only in fountain pen restoration but in any other way that i can help as i feel vintage fountain pens are becoming more popular.
I also feel that there are a lot of new or novice pen collectors who would benefit from some advice or any knowledge that i can provide.
